It's probably good that I was on the phone for that last discussion,

because in person, the police might have been called.

I'm selling my house in CT. We've done some upgrades / improvements where I would have NEVER thought any town permit would have been needed....but they were. IE, if I'm replacing existing windows with new windows of the same size....why would a permit be needed? But with the sale under contract, the buyers want all the improvements properly permitted.

The good news is that our town is pretty reasonable in not screwing you over for not knowing you needed permits. On the other hand, there are some rules that just don't make sense.

I was back in town 2 weeks ago to get 4 permits issued. For one of them, renovation of 3 bathrooms, I was told that I'd need sign off and a permit from a master electrician and a master plumber, even though the only electrical work that was done was replacing the lights and vents with different lights and vents using the existing wires. Similar on plumbing....took out a shower, sink and toilet, put new ones into the same plumbing....but the town says I need the permits.

So today I finally arrange for my realtor to meet an electrician and plumber and let them in. They're done in 20 minutes, say everything looks great, and they'll go to town hall to file the permits. HOORAY!!

So I call town hall this afternoon to arrange for inspection (last step in the process) for middle to end of next week when we'll be back in town. The lady I'm speaking with says "Oh, I'm sorry, we can't schedule that yet. We forgot to tell you that your pool requires an electrician permit as well, and that will need to be filed before we can come out."

If I could have telekinetically blown up the entire bldg department, I think I would have, because I just wasn't thinking with anywhere close to a cool head when I heard that....and I'm normally a VERY under control person. I'm not sure I've been so pissed in YEARS. The electrician I had out TODAY could have looked at that, if they had told me it was needed....heck, even if the town rules on pools were clear that electrical inspection was needed, then it would be on me. Heck, I didn't think that replacing a pool with the exact same size pool required anything.

Rant done. Still pissed though, and now I'll be out an extra $100 at least. I've got to figure out some way to screw them over for that without it affecting the pending sale. Maybe don't pay my car taxes (billed in arrears) in full.
